I agree with Dan's comments.

As for choosing which packages to begin with -- just start with dpkg and
apt-get.

Get dpkg and apt-get to work under a normal BSD.

Over the past couple years, a few people have ported (or nearly
ported) dpkg and apt-get already to BSD. I'll look through my saved
messages and find the URLs.

Start with a dpkg that works. You can worry about individual packages
later.

You can choose your GNU utilities vs. BSD utilities later.
