Attempted to install to a virtual machine.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?

Normal installation process.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

d-i was unable to find a kernel to install.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

d-i would find and install a kernel.
