(Intenionally writing directly, not to the list.) Do you feel like you're making any progress? It doesn't sound like it to me, but maybe I am not interpreting things corectly. I would tend to make the same or similar suggestion to Thomas Schmitt's, that is, find somebody to help you "in person". Look for a local LUG (Linux User Group) and contact them and see if yu can either take your computer to one of their meetings for help, or (especially if there is not a nearby LUG, wirte to them and ask if one of their members lives near you and would be willing to help.
