I think that would only be a workaround... and a potentially unsafe
one, as the files could still be not around (or have been accidentally
deleted or similar), especially also in normal userspace.



POSIX is quite clear, that for uudencode/uudecode "/dev/stdout" is NOT
a file, that should cause the data to be printed to stdout... but a
special symbol.

So AFAIU, uuencode/uudecode should never even check whether these files
exist
