Apologies, I think I've let you down :-( .
I've made a *small* amount of progress at hacking on debconf (route
#2). But again I've had other things come up, not least another round
of Secure Boot fixes. We're not going to have changes in for
Bullseye. Sorry. :-(

Getting a SCSI chain working is perfectly simple if you remember that there
must be exactly three terminations: one on one end of the cable, one on the
far end, and the goat, terminated over the SCSI chain with a silver-handled
