Comments/Problems:

I have included the log records from the installation as
attachments along with my recorded notes that contain notes
about the hardware and directions for producing the usb pen
drive with the bootable installation iso

The "Partition hard drive" module only came up with USB pen
drive that was used
to hold the installation .iso

I had tried the installation once before using one of the
testing
weekly builds with the same outcome.

syslog: (attached)

- shows a 32GB device on sdb and a 500 Gb device on sda.

I think that the 32GB device is a partition left over from
the
Windows 7 install. The 500 Gb device is the rest of the
hard disk

- installer logs DEBUG errors when it cannot locate
libc6-udeb and libgcc1

- check-missing firmware messages (#725714 firmware
insallation bug)

- anna[3018] reports missing fat and scsi modules

- there are a bunch of errors when disk-detect and part-man
run

I am assuming that the system needs some firmware or kernel
modules that
either are not in the iso or are not being installed
correctly.

I am at a loss as to what to do here, or where to look to
sort out the
problems. The hardware is farily new, but it is not
esoteric. Any help
would be appreciated

Bernie Frankpitt

----------------------------------------------------------------
Procedure for making a boot USB drive
---------------------------------------------------------------

1) Find an empty USB Drive

2) Install jidgo-file using

        # app-get install jidgo-file

3) get an iso image using jigdo

(The Installation howto says that you can boot from any CD ISO
image that will fit on your usb stick)

To get the Jessie alpha (29/3/14) cd with firmware you need the
    unofficial debian installer image:

       # jigdo-lite http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/jessie_di_alpha_1/amd64/jigdo-cd/firmware-jessie-DI-a1-amd64-netinst.jigdo

Jigdo prompts you for the location of a local previous version of the iso
that you may have some ot the files you need. If you don't have one,
    press enter.

Jigdo will prompt you for a URI for your local debian mirror,
which will have an address of the form

        http://ftp.XY.debian.org

where XY is a code for you local debian mirror. See

    https://www.debian.org/mirror/list

    for New Zealand try

	http://ftp.nz.debian.org

It will take a while to download the iso, and the programmay cycle
through several mirrors to find all the file that it needs. When
the download is successfully completed you get the message

        Finished!

The fact that you got this far is a strong indication that
        `debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso' was generated correctly. I
will perform an additional, final check, which you can
interrupt safely with Ctrl-C if you do not want to wait.

OK: Checksums match, image is good!

If the download is unsuccessful, you might be hitting your mirror
in the middle of an update, try again later. If you still have no
    luck, try a different mirror.

4) Write the iso to a USB drive

    Delete any previous partition table:

        # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=512 count=1

    Create the new ones:

        # cfdisk /dev/sdb

Use the arrow keys to navigate the terminal interface
        > [New] <Enter> make new partition
	> select primary for partition type <p>
	> Select position at beginning of disk
	> [Bootable] <b> (toggles boot flag)
	> [Type] <ENTER> to describe file system type
	> select code to FAT16
	> [Write] write the new table and quit

    Install a mbr with
    	# install-mbr /dev/sdb

    Install a FAT16 filesystem with
        # mkdosfs /dev/sdb1

Copy the installation iso to the bootable partition on the USB
    dive with the command

        # cp debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso /dev/sdb1

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Booting the installer in the HP 850
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Plug in the USB drive

Check that USB CDROM is top priority for boot, disable the other boot
options in the BIOS

Power down the machine and restart

Select Graphical installer and work through the menu

That's installation-reports for Debian 7 with
- undefined errors
- problems which are likely to have been fixed in the meantime
- successful installation

Because of the age, there is no chance to analyse them further and therefore
they are no longer relevant or of any use for current releases:
