Given the nature of these boards, I guess Heinrich knows how to adapt
$console - if he's even using it.

The latter is not part of u-boot mainline, so I claim that one is free
to ignore :)

I still think this is the best option, any issues with that patch?

Environment variable $console should not contain any "console=" in U-Boot.

The current flash_kernel script is correct and should not be changed.
Otherwise you will break working boards.

Instead fix upstream U-Boot where $console is set incorrectly.

Ok, so it seems like this is impossible to solve since various places depend on either behavior.
