Comments/Problems:

Linux experience level: I have used Debian Stable on remote servers,
and installed Ubuntu once or twice on desktop/laptop machines where I
was completely wiping the existing disk not caring about the data. I
think I installed RedHat once sometime in the 1990s.

For this Debian install I used the graphical installer option.

Everything worked, but I encountered the following pain points,
which I shall now describe in way too much detail:

Firmware:

The installer requested additional firmware. This was described as
a possibility by the documentation which I had read beforehand.
However I had not prepared a USB stick with this ahead of time,
expecting that I could do that on my other machine and then plug
the stick into the install machine, should it turn out I needed
firmware.

Unfortunately this didn't work. Note I was plugging the stick into an
additional USB port, not replacing the stick with the install
image on.

Presumably the installer doesn't know to mount additional USB
sticks you insert during the installation process. Ideally it
would do so when you answer 'yes' to the 'install additional firmware'
question. If this is not feasible a note in the documentation
should be added if it isn't there already (it may be, and I missed
it).

I resolved the issue by restarting the installation with the
stick holding the firmware already inserted. It was then picked
up by the installer with no problem.

Partitioning:

My prior Linux experience is limited to situations where if I
am doing the install I don't care about preserving any existing
data because either there is none, or it is getting wiped
anyway.

Since the motivation for this install was 'Have another OS to
move personal data onto, before upgrading Windows 7 to
Windows 10 and relegating Windows to gaming and any Windows
specific Development', this was the first in time many years
where I needed to preserve data during an OS install intending to
dual boot.

Naturally partitioning became substantially more nerve-wracking
:)

My problem here was that immediately prior to the installation I
had replaced my original Windows 7 hard drive with two, new,
identical model, larger hard drives, one of which I had cloned my
Windows install onto, with the other reserved for Debian's use.

However, Guided Partitioning requires you to pick a drive, and
doesn't (at least at that point!) tell you anything about what's
on each. If, like mine, your hard drives have the same make and
model number you can't use that to tell them apart, and then you
are left with their order in the list, the Linux device name, and
the channel number to work it out.

Since I was coming from Windows and Windows device naming
conventions are entirely different from Linux, and the channel
numbers didn't appear to relate to anything either my BIOS,
POST messages, or my Windows install told me. I couldn't tell
one drive from the other and was faced with the prospect of a
50/50 chance of nuking the Windows drive.

I did have a backup (the original windows drive I had cloned)
but restoring it would have involved putting that drive back in
the case and a couple of hours of re-cloning, with 50/50 odds
of nuking the wrong drive again on the next install attempt.

At this point I almost bugged out in favour of the latest Jessie
8.2 live image and switching to Testing post-install.

However watching some youtube video of Debian installs with Manual
Partitioning, showed that the partition table for all disks
including file systems, was listed when choosing that option
instead of Guided.

So I got over the hurdle by going into to Manual to work out
which disk was which, and then switching to Guided from there.

After that experience, it was also no fun getting to the final
stage and being asked whether I wanted to commit my partition
changes on a screen that did not show what those changes were.

TL;DR: The full partition table should be shown at all times
throughout the partitioning process, including when picking
disks for a guided install, and confirming you want to commit
your changes. Ideally if you have empty disks these should be
highlighted as the preferred options for for Guided
partitioning.

Monitor going into standby during installation:

Really, I would prefer the screen not to go black during OS
installs, even to save energy :)

It does looks like something might have gone wrong until you
joggle the mouse or press a key.

Obviously it might not be possible to due to drivers and
such.

Contents of /etc/apt/sources.list:

This is a problem I encountered after the install, but it might
be down to the installer doing something not quite right.

I ended up with two lines at the top of this file, one
commented out, one not commented out, setting my install
media as a repository for apt. This meant that using
'apt-get install' after installation, it sometimes tried
to grab a package from install media I had now removed if it
thought the package was on it.

I'm not sure what the intended behaviour is here but given
my network was detected fine, and I chose the option to use
it for additional updates during the install, I would expect
not to have my install media referenced here at all.

The commented out line implies that something did try to
disable this, but given the uncommented line it implies
something re-enabled it.

Summary:

- Pickup of devices holding Firmware could be smoother.
- Guided partitioning doesn't give enough information
for you to know you which drive has the important
data on you don't want to nuke.
- Screens should not go black in the middle of my OS
installs even if it does save me electricity :)
- /etc/apt/sources.list referenced install media when
it probably shouldn't have. Installer may be attempting
to remove the reference and failing.

And thank you for filing these installation bug reports, they have been very
useful at the time they were filed!
If you know, that the issue you reported (and gets closed here) is still existing
in recent installation images, please file a new report for that!
