What I'm seeing is that ports struggle to get to work at all. Yes, this
particular commit was not helping at all, completely agree, and we have
to find solutions that fit everybody's needs.

Building a Debian CD is way more difficult than building a mini.iso.

Yes, with debian-cd one can stuff additional packages in the local/
directory, but again that's not so trivial, and that's duplicating
the work of making them available on network archives for the
already-installed systems.
