(Staring at the stuck screen with one of the last messages being amdgpudrmfb ...) I recall with nomodeset in effect, logs will contain [drm:amdgpu_init [amdgpu]] *ERROR* VGACON disables amdgpu kernel modesetting. but at least one can still use the computer.
