Comments/Problems:
Heard of Debian as a no-BS upstream of ubuntu and mint. Decided to try to resurrect my Thinkpad with it.
Started by spending about half an hour trying to find the appropriate image for a USB install.
Followed links from homepage and started downloading a 3-DVD set before realizing I did not have three USB drives available and looked for other media.
Booted successfully but was stymied by message "Detect network hardware - Some of your hardware needs non-free firmware files to operate. The firmware can be loaded from removable media, such as a USB stick or floppy. The missing firmware files are: iwlwifi-7260-17.ucode"
Googled to find resolution. Found a note that an unofficial net install including nonfree drivers is available.
Downloaded that, loaded to USB drive, booted, encountered same message.
Googled again to find the missing file.
Plugged the drive in to installation machine.
Clicked "Yes, load missing firmware from removable media".
Clicked Continue.
Waited approximately 20 seconds for installer to search. No option to select the file appeared. No error message appeared.
Gave up and downloaded Mint 19.1 and it works
I need a working machine right now so I'm not interested in fixing this atm
