Splash screen (like the background for the boot menu) appears for logon but the logon greeter never appears.
If you open a terminal window then startx it will start the gui (XFCE) as normal with no apparent issue.
The system runs Xubuntu Cosmic just fine as well as everything else I ever installed on it before now.
