I tend to agree that we should change the default.

It's not confusing to inexperienced users, because they will never see
it - they will either use guided partitioning or have someone else do
the installation for them.  And it is still not a bad idea to create a 
(small) swap partition for cold data even on systems with a lot of RAM.
