If you have your VM handy right now, check whether there's a dmsetup
create process around:

  ps | grep 'dmsetup create'

indeed, looks like there's something running while the installation is stuck on the part I reported:

~ # ps | grep 'dmsetup create'
19676 root     22592 S    dmsetup create -r osprober-linux-sda5
