That seems like it would help prevent burn-in on CRTs.  It kinda of
looks like the hardware is failing when the gamma is wrong ;-)

What I like about xbacklight (for laptops, if supported in firmware or
with ACPI tricks, or another method for quirky hardware) and
DDCcontrol is that they actually dim the backlight or power down the
ray gun.
