I made a BTRFS-raid1 over /dev/sdb2 and /dev/sdd1, that is, I put data on the harddisk test-partition first over NFS, and then added the extra USB-storage-key /dev/sdd1, balancing and converting the whole fun to RAID1, like so: > mount /dev/sdb2 /mnt/btrr1 > btrfs device add /dev/sdd1 /mnt/btrr1 > btrfs balance start -dconvert=raid1 -mconvert=raid1 /mnt/btrr1 (adapted from https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Using_Btrfs_with_Multiple_Devices) The only thing, that was peculiar, is that there are wrong diskspace-values shown with df, it actually shows twice the diskspace, that's there, because naturally you lose half of it by mirroring the devices, which df does not take into account. But it turned out, that all data stored also occupies twice the disk-space, so in the end df will show you correctly, when there is no diskspace left and correct percentage-values. Originally I wanted to use FreeBSD and ZFS, because obviously it is the more mature filesystem and it compresses more effectively with LZ4 than BTRFS with LZO-compression. FreeBSD also ran quite nicely on the box, but there was no driver for the SATA-contoller, bad luck! All I have to do now is to transfer my existing backups from the external harddisk to the internal SATA-drive, again using NFS for that, and then format and repartition the external disk, so it can be added as redundant secondary USB-disk to the RAID. I decided to make a 620/310 GB split, using most of the space as normal network-storage and the rest dedicated to backups. I guess it would not be too hard to also export the diskspace with samba as an SMB-share, but currently I simply have no use for that at all, It's also increasingly unlikely, that I will ever need that at home. An 8 GB USB-stick would be enough as home to the Debian-root filesystem, but you can buy 32 GB-sticks at around EUR 10.- currently, and you don't save very much when taking a smaller one, and it seemed to make sense to have some spare diskspace there for a local mail-server, print-server, monitoring, etc. [also see the attached picture, showing how the notebook-harddisk is attached to the closing-lid with double-sided adhesive tape inside the bubble-wrap pouch, it was originally delivered in.] Including two 1GB-harddisks, and 2 GB RAM, the overall system-price is about EUR 150,-, there is a special combined SATA-data-and-power expansion cable necessary, 20 cm are enough. - -- Please make sure that the hardware-summary log file, and any other installation logs that you think would be useful are attached to this report. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 It really wasn't an all bad experience for me, I learned how to deal with btrfs-raid with a missing device, restored and rescued about 200G of my old backups, and the rest is not so critical, because of course one can make new backups, when there is not actually the acute need to recover anything and the rest was redundant anyway, things that are stored on my large PC, also on a RAID. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iEYEARECAAYFAlblnQYACgkQ5+rBHyUt5wspqACgnJ04vRQQkOyRrf22taAQmwry I3AAn3r7xDybAIPBDVU29NPTsRko1pd+ =l0jI -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
