Comments/Problems:

<Description of the install, in prose, and any thoughts, comments
and ideas you had during the initial install.>

Description of the install:

I used the expert text install. This was an install where I attempted
to minimize what was installed by navigating (when the time came) into
the install tasks menu but excluding everything on tasksel's checklist
menu. Once this "minimum package" install was done, and the reboot
was succesful, then I continued on the normal command line with
apt-get install of X, KDE, etc., configuring as I went. That process
of adding packages is almost done now, and the system information
collected below presumably reflects that since I delayed sending in a
report until this command-line installation part of the install (which
has nothing to do with the installer) was almost done.

The initial minimum wheezy install did require resizing an existing
partition (mounted as /home for the previous Debian squeeze install)
without losing information. That was the first time I had ever tried
resizing with the aid of the Debian installer, and it was a success.
The result was I was able to preserve my previous squeeze install and
dual-boot from it. This dual-boot to squeeze could be useful in an
emergency, although so far I have only tested that dual-boot works,
and I haven't actually needed it for such an emergency.

Any thoughts, comments and ideas you had during the initial install:

My thoughts were the text install would have been quite simple for even
Debian newbies (which I am not) except for the misleading/noninformative
navigation messages mentioned in the above subject line:

Here are my notes (taken at the time) on those
misleading/noninformative navigation messages:

Start screen says "Press ENTER to boot or TAB to edit a menu entry"

That last verb is nonsensical. Why would you want to "edit" a menu
entry? I think what is meant here is navigate (as opposed to edit)
menus. However, I am not sure because the tab key did nothing! I
actually navigated to the advance options using the arrow key (not the
tab key) and then entered that menu with ENTER (contrary to the above
message which claims that will boot).

I then chose Expert install in that advanced menu, and for this case
RETURN does boot. But then in text mode there continues to be
misleading messages about navigation. For example, in the first
overall choice menu, it claims <TAB> moves <SPACE> selects, <ENTER>
activates buttons, but in fact for this screen <TAB> and <SPACE> do nothing,
arrow keys actually move from one menu item
to the next, and <ENTER> selects the item!

Later I did discover screens where <TAB> did actually make overall moves
(although the arrows and not the <space> bar were still needed
to navigate individual menus).

Anyhow, some attention to the navigation messages displayed for each
screen to make them appropriate for that screen would be a huge help
to newbies in my opinion.

Other misleading messages:

* "Detect and mount CD-ROM" is misleading when installing from a USB stick
(as I was). Even the actual successful detection message claimed my
USB stick was a CD-ROM. This overall menu item should read instead
something like "Detect and mount installation medium (CD-ROM, USB-stick, etc.)

* Same issue with "Load installer components from CD"

Your report is more than four years old, it has probably been acknowledged well enough,
thus I close it now.

You are right, the installer lives in a CD-image, but it's a hybrid ISO-image, that's
also bootable from USB-storage keys. If people dd'ed the image onto an USB-stick and use
it for installing, then they should normally be knowing what they do and should not be
mislead too much by the reference to the traditional original medium CD.
