This is what revision control is for.  I've seen too many codebases that
were an utter mess due to the approach of keeping stuff around in the
current tree just in case it might be needed in future, iterated over
years; better to nip that in the bud and trust that you can get the
history from revision control if you need it.

A comment explaining where to look in the case of missing device nodes
would be more helpful than the current dubious-looking state.
