Package: debian-installer
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

While installing debian, the first real use of the keyboard is for entering
root password.
However, as the password characters are hidden on screen, the user can't verify
the characters stored for the password are really those he thinks to.
This situation has been proned to many bugs as :
- the keys bindings layout could not match the layout printed on the user
keyboard for many reasons.
- the keys bindings layout can change between installer and 1st boot, or
graphical session.
In both case the user has an unuseable system.
The hack right now that many use out of USA is to first enter a root password
that only contains ASCII characters (no #,@ etc...) and avoid Q,W,N,M letters.

A proposal to fix this bug vould be :
1. Have another texbox on the same screen where the user could test his
keyboard layout.
2. Have an option to not mask the password in the textbox while typing it like
we have on Android for example (only the last letter is shown)

Thanks.

thanks

Hi,

As there were 2 bugs asking for this feature, I forgot to close this one
with the upload of 0.197, so I'm doing it now.

Thanks,
Regis
