It does not seem to work correctly with symlinks in all cases; I
have had test cases with broken installations after upgrades when
using symlinks (in these cases sometimes the symlinks got removed
and replaced by the binary instead of placing the binary at the
target of the symlink).

Raspbian will keep the current setup (i.e. the VFAT system
partition as /boot) at least for the nearer future for
compatibility with the Raspberry Pi foundation's kernel releases.
The issue has been referred to the foundation in january, but I
have received no response from there, so I am closing my wishlist
bug as it does not make sense to me to keep it open anymore.
