Bug#714470: Problem still exists in 7.3.0 installer
I've just tried to re-install Debian on a NUC and encountered the same
problem.
IIRC, when I first installed it I used an image on CD and had no issues
- the installation went smoothly and everything worked.
I recently decided to upgrade the NUC to a 480G SSD, and went for a
fresh installation using a thumb drive and initially the 7.1.0
installation image.
The noticeable difference is that the installation process insists on
creating an EFI boot partition, and you don't get the "Install Grub to
MBR?" query. Instead a message flashes by mentioning something about
"dummy grub" or "null grub" and then the installer says that
installation is complete.
The trouble is that it then doesn't boot.
I tried downloading the latest installer image 7.3.0 but the problem was
exactly the same.
I then downloaded the latest netboot.tar.gz image and set up a network
boot environment to do the installation. This worked fine. The
installer did not insist on an EFI boot partition - indeed I let it
choose everything and it went for a traditional layout.
The "Install Grub to MBR?" prompt was back, and after the installation
was complete the NUC booted without difficulty.
It looks like the implementation of EFI booting isn't quite complete
and/or correct, so the thumb drive installer probably shouldn't default
to it.
