Not all systems supported by Debian even have graphical displays, so
it hardly seems like something that would even work on all systems,
and certainly doesn't sound like it ought to be the default to include.

Thanks for this hint, I hadn't thought about it.
It would be good to know, if plymouth handles such situations gracefully. I CC'ed Daniel Baumann, the maintainer of plymouth, so that he can answer this question.

I'd call it a feature, but if you don't like it, you still could remove it.

While some want to have it and some don't, I think it really might
be a good idea to install plymouth by default, as 'novices'
generally prefer it, and anyone who wants to see the boot messages
should have sufficient knowledge to remove it.

So please install plymouth by default.

Why would novices want it?

It hides all the 'strange' boot messages, that 'novices' are not accustomed to and instead presents a nice image.

Does it make booting faster or slower?

Probably it makes booting slower, because it has to load the background image. I haven't seen any noticeable speed difference, but I haven't measured it exactly.

I am not a maintainer or DD, just a very long time user.

Nonetheless I value your opinion. I should add, that I'm also neither DD nor DM.

Best regards,
Andreas
