It is unfortunately *not* a simple feature: It could require: - that we add an extra question (we can't make this the default, this is basic security) - that, based on the answer to this question, we store the password in debconf in either a string datatype or a password datatype - later on, that we switch back to use a password datatype as, in no way, we can keep the root passowrd in clear text in the debconf database - that we make sure all this works with preseeded setups This is a lot of code and extra complexity for something that remains a corner case (sorry for Dvorak keyboard users but this *is* a corner case: I still fail to see how in can buy a Dvorak keyboard at the corner computer shop..:-)) So, really sorry, but I don't see this happening in a near future. How about entering a password with things that *don't change* between "regular and Dvorak keymaps, such as the numeric keypad? Then change it once the machine is setup and you choose "Brazilian Dvorak" on the installed system?
