Comments/Problems:
My first attempt to install wheezy failed; the second was successful. The initial failure wiped out the (unimportant, to me) existing data on the hard drive, which I had tried to leave in-place on the first attempt.
tried to install wheezy beta 3 from usb
- sudo dd if=Desktop/debian-wheezy-DI-b3-amd64-netinst.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=4096
- 2GB USB stick
- no obvious errors
- iso has correct md5sum
- e9f2479c43a623dd8b9c0bc95d8460ce Desktop/debian-wheezy-DI-b3-amd64-netinst.iso
- press tab when install menu comes up, add "desktop=kde" (without the
quotes), press enter [normal installer, not graphical installer]
- plugged in ethernet cable at the language selection screen
- for some reason, when prompted for components, "desktop environment"
wasn't auto-selected. I added it. Laptop, ssh, maybe one other at
the bottom were all already correctly selected, I left those alone.
- selected auto partitioning, using largest contiguous free space,
only use one partition for all directories
- no particular reason to leave existing Squeeze installation in
place, but thought it might be nice to see how nicely the Wheezy
installer plays with Squeeze on a hdd
- failed at some point during the install phase
- "select and install software" had been progressing normally, as if
it would take roughly half an hour, total; I thought there should
still be 5-10 minutes left when things failed
- I *think* it was still downloading files when things broke. But
I'm not positive: I wasn't paying that close of attention.
- suddenly had a red screen saying something had failed and I could
retry the individual step
- retried the highlighted step, to install software, twice. Both
times got the same red screen.
- gave up, exited installation, causing laptop to reboot.
- was able to press F12 for boot selection menu, but then couldn't
change selection (i.e. needed to press the down arrow three
times to select the USB drive; nothing happened when I pressed
that key).
- F12 key is loose (key isn't fully connected to keyboard), so
may have been a hardware error on my end.
power cycled, tried the install from scratch
- same USB stick (didn't try to re-write the image to it)
- added 'desktop=kde' again
- this time, when selecting components, desktop environment *was*
auto-selected. So was print server, though, which I didn't
expect; I deselected that. The "bottom 3" (ssh, laptop, ummmm
something else?) were also selected, like last time, which I
expected and didn't try to change.
- no longer had the option to install to free space
- does this imply the original install attempt did something bad to
the drive?
- selected auto partitioning, full drive, only use one partititon
- installation was successful
- probably irrelevant, but grub menu had unexpected extra entries. Complete menu:
- Debian GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.2.0-3-amd64
- Debian GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.2.0-3-amd64 (recover mode)
- Debian GNU/Linux (wheezy/sid) (on /dev/sdb5)
- Debian GNU/Linux (wheezy/sid) (on /dev/sdb5)
- Debian GNU/Linux (wheezy/sid) (on /dev/sdb5)
- Debian GNU/Linux (wheezy/sid) (on /dev/sdb5)
- Debian GNU/Linux (wheezy/sid) (on /dev/sdb5)
I selected the first, and booted successfully into a KDE desktop
Partitions and lspci output, above, are after the second, successful
boot attempt into wheezy-KDE.

I read through all the bugs mentioned here (and I'm sure they were read by several people at the time they were submitted) and am closing them now as/if - they (finally) indicated success and/or - I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in Wheezy and/or - they only contained very little information and/or - they contained user errors and/or - they were caused by broken hardware and/or - they have been from a development phase where things were not stable and/or - they are quite old (and thus likely fixed today) and/or - moreinfo was asked and not given. If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll do if requested) or just file a new one - thats often better, as the bug log will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft. cheers, HolgerAttachment: signature.asc
