So I would suspect you still have some problem with the network site, as it was
during installation as well.
Because of this network error during installation, the desktop environment
was not installed. 
And without network connection, you still cannot install it afterwards now.

If you log in as root: what's the output of 
	"ifconfig" ?
In the output of "lspci", is there a network card listed?
