Bug#694934: Installer hangs at detect network hardware

Do we consider it as an expected (as in: “need firmware”) situation?
Or is there anything we could be doing on the d-i level to smooth
things up?
The installer left the machine in an apparently unusable state where
(1) there was no internet connection, because it was necessary (or so I thought) to skip the "configure the network" step; and
(2) there was no usable command-line prompt on the first reboot, because the firmware required for the Radeon card was not present and the X-server did not release me from the garbled GUI.
I was able to recover control of the machine with the aid of a live rescue disk, and a more expert user could perhaps have achieved the same result in a simpler way. I feel sure, however, that any steps the D-I team (and/or Xorg people?) might take in order to smooth things a little would be widely appreciated.
