Bug#692731: Acknowledgement (Debian wheezy CD1 beta3 installation on Mac Pro Retina)

I couldn't sleep so I had another go and found some more problems but
got it installing under EFI and booting in EFI mode! eventually ....

Definitely need the kernel options acpi=none nointremap nomodeset to do this
again need to use tab and add these options in manually when booting
via EFI off external CD

Note: USB made from CD image (by dd to USB device) doesn't work at all
on MAC pro

Need proprietary firmware but the loader is broken. I got the firmware
and tried placing it
in several places and it couldn't find it. This included USB top
level, in subdirectory b43 on USB,
in root file system / and /b43.

In the end I looked at the script running and noticed the
/lib/firmware directory didn't exist so I just
created the /lib/firmware/b43 directory and placed required firmware
files directly in that and it was able to move on and detect the
access points and authenticate with WPA2 !

I attach them - it might not need ht0initvals29.fw - as I might have
copied that over by mistake but it certainly wanted the other two:

ucode29_mimo.fw
ht0bsinitvals29.fw

Other issues minor - but annoying

o After setting up grub it doesn't copy over the extra options I
typed in (mentioned above) that allow the kernel to boot. So by
default it will lock up!

o When the extra boot options are present still has the annoying
kernel bug where it prints repeatedly:
applesmc: read arg fail

over and over for about 30+ secs before it times out and continues on.
This is fixed in later kernels such as 3.6.0 which I am running
happily. Back port fix?

Doesn't offer discard as an ext4 mount option - yet this is
recommended for flash drives like the MAC Pro has.

Could offer tmpfs to allow /tmp to be a tmpfs filesystem?

I did a non desktop install and tried get wmii and X working manually
but can't get X to start to start up
otherwise ok.

It discovered my other partitions and correctly listed all my kernels yeah!

Graphics look *REALLY* good under the EFI boot.

Thanks

Andrew
