I have also been experiencing hard freezes with kernel 3.2 on a
different machine with this CPU/graphics combination (Core
i5-3210M / integrated HD 4000 graphics).

My first suspicion was that I might have defective RAM, but
memtest has found no problems and even after exchanging the
memory modules for testing purposes the crashes kept occuring, so
I assume the memory is ok.

I suspect that the problem is somewhere in the graphics support.
I can run the machine for a long time when logged in remotely via
ssh even under heavy load (large compile jobs) without any
crashes, but when using X11 locally on the computer, it usually
hangs at least once a day, often more. Getting usable debug
information is difficult, as the machine suddenly hangs
completely - no network connectivity, no response to sysrq. When
audio is playing at the time of the crash, the last fragment of
audio that was output before the crash loops endlessly.

With the linux-image-3.2.0-4-amd64 package from sid similar
crashes also occured.

Changing the kernel to a self-built 3.6.4 from upstream source
seems to have solved the problem; there have been no crashes
since.

Karsten
