I would not imagine DMA matters much for reading a CD.

Does the disc boot on other machines?

As in:

Boots|Packard Bell|Something else
-----+------------+--------------
Beta1|Yes         |Yes
Beta2|No          |???

Maybe Beta2 did some change that hit a bug in the CD boot code on the
old machine.
