I have been looking through several installation reports and it seems the
same effect (hanging at 40% in the "Starting up the partition manager" stage
after a failed attempt to load network device firmware) is described in bug
681656, Message #35 (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=681656#35).
