Weird.  Unfortunately I haven't heard of any bugs matching that description.

Do I understand correctly that the installation worked fine and the
first boot worked fine, except that during gdm startup the boot sector
was corrupted?  That would suggest a serious bug in hardware, the
kernel, or privileged userspace, but unfortunately without further
information it is not clear how to track it down.

Any hints you can think of (what the screen looked like, whether there
have been any problems on the machine since then, etc) would be
very useful.
