Three issues:

There was an (I think) bogus error dialog that popped up
when partitioning the disks:
I asked the installer to use the entire disk and partition
it as it sees fits (LVM, encryption, no separate /home etc.).
It created:
SCSI1 (0, 0, 0) (sda) - 80.0 GB ATA FUJITSU etc.

#3 256.0 MB F ext2 untitled /boot
#4 79.8 GB K crypto untitled (sda4_crypt)

Then when I confirmed that it looked ok to me and I
wanted to continue, the following error popped up:
"NewWorld boot partition was found. The yaboot boot loader
requires an Apple_Bootstrap partition at least 819200 bytes
in size, using the HFS Macintosh file system.
Go back to the menu and resume partitioning?"
This I found a bit confusing. There was a previous install
of OSX on the drive, but I asked the installer to wipe the
entire disk (which it did afaict) and just put debian on it,
so I didn't really know what to do with that dialog.
As it turns out, everything worked just fine if I ignore it.
yaboot boots perfectly into the kernel.
=== #2 ===
If I'm not mistaken, the ATI RV350 Mobility Radeon 9600 M10
graphics card on this machine should be perfectly capable of
running gnome-shell with free drivers. While there was no
problem booting into the system and starting X, gnome-shell
falls back into GNOME2-style fallback mode. It seems to me
that somehow the graphics card is not set up correctly from
the start. (I haven't had time to find out if it can be
configured right to make this work yet with the free driver,
so possibly there's no issue here at all; would appreciate
any comments regarding this if someone knows more).

The b43legacy wifi adaptor doesn't seem to work properly with
the latest wpasupplicant (works fine with WEP though). I guess
this is not an installer issue though.
