Grub loader, finds but doesn't save "other" OS.

System is Toshiba satellite laptop, 2GB ram, Intel Pentium duo-core, Windows Vista professional, 32 bit.

Debian 6.0.1a, from DVD, using graphic installer.

Grub FINDS the Windows system, but apparently FAILS to store the information.

When you finish and reboot, there is NO "other operating system" and no windows vista in the menu.

ALL it lists is debian, normal and "recovery mode."

Had to erase partition,  then reload Debian 5.0.4 which does NOT have this problem.

Will it work if I load 6.0.1a and NOT install the loader and just leave the boot loader from 5.0.4, so long as the partition size, number, (in this case 4, primary,) and location remains the same?

Thank you.
