on the end of chapter 4.3.1 I read I have to issue the "sync" command after I cat the iso to the usb key raw device;

I think there is no need for it: sync is used to flush file system buffers (as stated also by sync(1) man page), but here we are writing to a raw device, not to a a filesystem... it is not a problem to issue this sync, but it is also not useful to do it

Raw devices are not so raw, there's a buffer cache there too.
