I have news.
Good news!
Upgrading busybox from version 1:1.1.3-3 to
1:1.18.5-1 fixed it.
I used SystemRescueCD http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page
to boot my computer, mount the hard drive, chroot into it,
upgrade busybox and run "update-initramfs -u -k all".
Then I rebooted, and the bug was gone.
I'm happy to report that Roger and Petter's
prompt and insightful replies trumped IRC and
created a more permanent record here for
fellow travelers.
I wish I didn't feel the need to mention this, but
on a related note, I am worried that "apt-get dist-upgrade"
(or maybe it was "aptitude full-upgrade") failed to
upgrade busybox.
Maybe old versions of busybox will break other applications
too.
Humble suggestions:
1.) Make sysvinit depend on at least version 1:1.18.5-1
of busybox, and
2.) give apt-get's and aptitude's maintainers a head's up
that at least in my case, busybox wasn't upgraded, and
raise the possibility of causing other bugs.
Thank you very much for your quick and helpful replies,
Kingsley
PS: Jeroen: good luck. :-)
