It sounds a lot like bad RAM or maybe other hardware. I have seen Windows
install happily on a machine that couldn't even get past the bogomips
calibration loop on linux. Replaced the CPU and the machine worked fine.
Windows installed and ran (although crashed frequently, although the
owner of the machine didn't think that was unusual for some reason).

Software only segfaults if it has a major bug (in which case it segfaults
consistently in most cases), or if the ram or cpu is corrupting memory
(which I suspect is what you are seeing).

I don't think there is anything wrong with the debian installer.
It sounds like hardware problems.

The fact knoppix boots really doesn't mean much at all. It may just be
lucky and load some data in the bad memory area and not notice that it
got corrupt.
