I did dd if=debian-6.0.1a-amd64-i386-netinst.iso of=/dev/sde bs=128k
yesterday, and it booted fine.

So at least some of the netinst images work as intended.  cat or dd
should not matter.

Of course make sure it is NOT mounted before you cat to it (mine messed
up the first time due to the stupid automounter mounting the previous
filesystem automatically).

Of course some BIOSes have issues with USB boot.
