I've long thought the installer's handling surrounding setting the time needs help. Initial gripe: The question asked is "Is your system clock set to UTC?". Generally, the answer is no, it's not set to UTC at the moment. It's usually set to my local time zone, but sometimes set completely wrong. I do want the hardware clock to keep UTC, but if I answer "no" I won't be keeping UTC time on the hardware clock; exactly the opposite of what I want. The proper question, given the current installer code, is: "Will your system clock keep UTC time henceforward?" IMHO, the installer should ask the following clock related questions and take the following actions: ++++++++ Choose time zone (the usual selection) Should this system's hardware keep UTC time from now on? (It could set the default using the clever other-OS-detection that the grub section of the installer uses to recommend whether or not to install grub in the MBR, and then cache the results for the grub install part.) If there is a network connection: Set date/time from the network? (Y,N) If Y (for network install load ntpdate stuff) Enter ntp server (default to Debian ntp pool) (Display date/time, allow OK or Go Back) (Delete ntpdate stuff from ramdisk (for low memory installs)) If no network connection or user does not want to set date/time from network: Which date/time is correct? [*] {show date/time, assuming hwclock is local tz) (default) [ ] (show date/time, assuming hwclock is UTC) (only show above if hwclock is to be set to UTC) [ ] None of the above, set date/time manually Ok Go Back (to test for network) If manually setting date/time: Enter date/time: (allow gnu date/time input format cleverness, or to save ram have 2 prompts, one for date, and another for time, with strict format requirements) Display date/time (allow Ok or Go Back, which (at minimum) goes back to test for network.) ++++++++ Implementation note: When user enters date/time do not set clock. Record timestamp when time was entered. Subsequent display of date/time should be adjusted by the offset of the current time from the recorded timestamp. When the installer finishes, then it sets date/time using the recorded offset to correctly (more or less) set the time. IIRC at this point in the installation the disk has already been munged, but it still seems polite to defer makeing changes for as long as possible. Setting the date/time from the network is not really necessary, but sure would make life easier. Regardless, the current "clock question" is, at best, confusing. Minimally, IMHO, the user should be allowed to adjust the hardware clock from the local tz to UTC as part of the installation process. (And if you're going that far why not let them fix a bad time set in the hwclock?) Having a bad time in the clock on install can make life confusing later. Especially if the time is set in the future, but also when the time is too far in the past. Improving the installer on this point would eliminate the need to go mucking about in the BIOS to check/set the time before every install. Thank your for your time. -- Please make sure that the hardware-summary log file, and any other installation logs that you think would be useful are attached to this report. This package contains libparted, the required shared library used by Parted. This is a cut-down package with no normal documentation intended to be used in debian-installer. . Parted currently supports DOS, Mac, Sun, BSD, GPT, MIPS and PC98 disklabels/partition tables, as well as a 'loop' (raw disk) type which allows use on RAID/LVM. Filesystems which are currently fully supported are ext2, ext3, fat (FAT16 and FAT32), ReiserFS (with libreiserfs) and linux-swap. Parted can also detect and remove HFS (Mac OS), JFS, NTFS, UFS (Sun and HP), XFS and ASFS/AFFS/APFS (Amiga) filesystems, but cannot create, resize or check these filesystems yet. . Note that ReiserFS support is only enabled if you install the libreiserfs0.3-0 package. Since libreiserfs0.3-0 has been removed from sarge, ReiserFS support is not compiled in the default package. . The nature of this software means that any bugs could cause massive data loss. While there are no known bugs at the moment, they could exist, so please back up all important files before running it, and do so at your own risk. - Subject: Closing this bug: no reason to see the installer's behaviour as "lame" wrt clock

Really. I think that the current way clock-setup is working answers to most use cases and can certainly not be told to be 'lame'. Moreover, this bug report doesn't give a really clear picture of what the bug submitter is trying to achieve. Given that the default behaviour is to adjust the clock with rdate/ntp, we certainly end up with a properly setup clock in most cases. Other "corner" cases are anyway well covered by other bug reports for clock-setup, imho. Hence closing. --Attachment: signature.asc
