You can boot into rescue mode and reinstall grub. But this does not do
100% the same thing as if grub-installer is run during a normal
installation. 

Running expert mode won't help as it does not let you run the
bootloader step before you install the system. If you don't mind
fiddling with the installer state you can boot the installer and
manually set bootstrap base to the configured state, mount the
partitions at the right place and then you should be able to run
grub-installer again.

The most reliable test is to do a complete reinstall to an empty
partition. This would leave your existing installation intact.
