Severity: important

* Libcanberra outputs using ALSA rather than PulseAudio

Although this might seem to be a trivial problem after ALSA has been
redirected to PulseAudio, it seems to lead to strange problems with
Empathy (Rhythmbox and Totem's sounds stops/get muted during Empathy's
ones).
Installing libcanberra-pulse fixes these problems.
Ban: Here's a list of troubleshootings I encountered after my fresh Squeeze
beta1 install, with GNOME desktop and laptop support.

The problems are more or less listed in importance order.

* No sound from ALSA-using applications

ALSA-using applications are unable to emit sound, probably because the
ALSA plugin for PulseAudio is not setup although PulseAudio is the
default sound system. Creating and filling an asound.conf with proper
redirections fixes the problem.

This affects e.g. the sound in gnome-games (Iagno, four-in-a-row, ...)

The asound.conf I used to fix ALSA-using programs:

pcm.pulse {
    type pulse
}
ctl.pulse {
    type pulse
}
pcm.!default {
    type pulse
}
ctl.!default {
    type pulse
}

* Default SDL version is not the PulseAudio-enabled one

Default version of SDL is libsdl1.2debian-alsa and not
libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio, which isn't optimal for PulseAudio-enabled
systems and breaks sound in some applications (e.g. Teeworlds have
serious problems when failing to play sound, which is the case with the
default libsdl installed).
Please make libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio the default libsdl.

* Libcanberra uses ALSA rather than PulseAudio

Although this might seem to be a trivial problem after ALSA has been
redirected to PulseAudio, it seems to lead to strange problems with
Empathy (Rhythmbox and Totem's sounds stops/get muted during Empathy's
ones).
Installing libcanberra-pulse fixes these problems.

* Sudo-enabled systems misses correct PolicyKit configuration

When installing without root account but sudo (from an expert install),
PolicyKit is not configured to grand rights for sudo-enabled users but
for root, and it is then not possible to use PolicyKit authentication
by default.

I have fixed the problem with a custom PolicyKit rule, that follows:

/etc/polkit-1/localauthority.conf.d/51-debian-sudo.conf:
[Configuration]
AdminIdentities=unix-group:sudo

Even though this is a problem that only applies to expert installs
AFAIK (AFAIR only expert install proposes the setting), it has a major
usability drawback, especially with GNOME that uses PolicyKit at many
places.

* GDM3 configuration

GDM3 seems to lack a lot of configuration options in it's GNOME
configuration tool, particularly theme selection. Any replacement?

* How to execute custom scripts upon device plugging?

gnome-volume-manager used to provide such possibility, but isn't
available anymore. I used it to setup my graphic tablet's buttons upon
connection with a tiny script using xsetwacom (I have a Wacom Bamboo).
There don't seem to be a GUI for tablet configuration, neither one
allowing me to make my script be run upon tablet's connection.

Quoting Cardamine (cardamine@herbesfolles.org):

.../...

Given that your installation was a complete success, I do as
usual with reports for successful installations: I close the bug..:-)

This does not of course mean you weren't right to report. Knowing the
installations are correct is important for the d-i team.

Many thanks for your time testing the Debian Installer and reporting
your results. Have fun with your new Debian system!

Particularly, all various issues should rather be reported against the
different packages they belong to. The Debian Installer team currently
does't have the ressources and knowledge of all packages for
processing complex install reports with different issues belonging to
different packages.

I first tried to imagine how to clone this install report many times
and reassign the various clones to the gazillion of packages
involved...but just retitling the bugs was a PITA.

You're apparently very knowledgable about multimedia stuff and I
encourage you to do individual bug reports against the package you
think are appropriate.
