It wouldn't format a FAT32 partition and it wouldn't install the base system. The second time it worked but gave a warning when installing. <Description of the install, in prose, and any thoughts, comments and ideas you had during the initial install.> Overall, I really like the installer. I am totally blind and I was very happy to see that Speakup is still included in the daily builds. I had no problem starting the install with speech. I generally found the install to be smooth except that I got a warning from dpkg when installing the base system. The first time I tried to install, I got an error with debootstrap and sysvinit. It complained that it couldn't open /dev/initctl but the device file was there and appeared to be writable. That happened when installing both testing and stable. The second time, I didn't bother with installing testing and it worked fine except that debootstrap gave a warning with "dpkg --pre-dep package" once. I think I got a warning with grub also but I don't recall what it was. Also, the first time it wouldn't format a 180 GB FAT32 partition. It said there was an error but didn't say what. It's a fairly new drive, so it should have worked. I noticed that it set the partition type to "F" when in fact it should have been "C" for partitions larger than 2 GB in size. I wanted it to be FAT32 so Windows XP, Windows 98 and Linux would be able to read and write to it as necessary. /dev/sda1 is Windows XP and /dev/sda2 is Windows 98. /dev/sda3 is my 50 GB Linux partition, /dev/sda4 is extended and /dev/sda5 is a 1.5 GB swap. I still haven't partitioned the free space because of the problems with the installer. All partitioning was done with the manual partitioner and fdisk from live CDs. Unfortunately, where I still have a serious problem is after the installation, which is why I marked the bug as "important." Yes, the system is bootable and appears to work, but all the packages are marked as automatically installed. As soon as I try to upgrade or install anything new, Aptitude wants to remove almost everything. Also, even though I selected to install the desktop environment task, many packages from gnome-desktop-environment weren't installed, including Orca. I changed my sources.list to testing instead of Lenny, but that still didn't help as you can see below: Script started on Fri Sep 25 00:53:04 2009 tony:~# aptitude -q install zip unzip Reading package lists... - Subject: Closing old installation report #548283
- From: Christian Perrier <bubulle@debian.org>
- Date: Wed, 08 Sep 2010 21:18:34 +0000
- Message-id: <E1OtS2M-0002lF-8S@ravel.debian.org>
We are closing this installation report for one of the following reasons: - it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian Installer. - indications in the installation report give the feeling that the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to D-I, which we can't easily identify. - indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component - it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-) - it has no information we consider useful The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet. In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be still present, please reiterate your installation test with a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this. You'll find daily builds at http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to install "squeeze" when prompted. If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent against installation-reports. Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian, past and present.
