Much improved experience! The disks (SATA) were set in the BIOS to use AHCI mode. Can't recall if I upgraded the BIOS since last report. I did not have to do anything special for them to be recognized. I have two disks, one with Vista and Debian partitions (this install was done to the Debian portion) and the other with Ubuntu Hardy. The installer noticed the LVM setups for both the debian & hardy installs,so tt required some concentration to select the right partitions for installation but otherwise partman did its job admirably. The partitioning was manual: a real 1Gb partition for /, and everything else in a singleLVM volume group. The only difficulty was the wireless card, a rtl8185, which only got support in 2.6.25 or 26. It was detected and the driver loaded, but I could not get it to configure via DHCP during installation. I selected 'wlan0', not 'eth1' from the list of interfaces. The network I was trying to conect to has: - 48-bit WEP encryption (I checked the key several times) - only specified MAC addresses are allowed to connect (was working with Hardy) - the SSID is not broadcast (also checked the string several times). The same card in the same box was working on the Hardy install (admittedly, using 2.6.24+ndiswrapper) so I doubt the wireless config was the problem. I tried to configure the IP address etc manually (via the installer interface) but I was not able to ping the router/dhcp server (ie <alt-F2> ; chroot /target; ping 192.168.13.1; this failed with 'no route to host' and iwlist could not return any APs) So I continued without the network, and got a minimal system installed (selected 'standard' in tasksel). When I booted into the installed system, the wireless network card was working. I had it statically configured, so I did 'ifdown wlan0', edited /e/n/interfaces to have a DHCP type configuration, and did 'ifup wlan0'. DHCP worked fine. To confirm the issue I booted the installer again and worked through the menus to the network configuration stage. I saw it again, as before. Let me know if you feel this needs to be chased down. syslog.gz attached. ---- cat /var/log/installer/lsb-release DISTRIB_ID=Debian DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Debian GNU/Linux installer" DISTRIB_RELEASE="5.0 (lenny) - installer build 20080926-19:11" X_INSTALLATION_MEDIUM=hd-media cat /var/log/installer/hardware_summary umame -a: Linux debian 2.6.26-1-486 #1 Wed Sep 10 16:00:21 UTC 2008 i686 unknown lspci -knn: 00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31/P35/P31 Express DRAM Controller [8086:29c0] (rev 02) lspci -knn: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:29c2] (rev 02) lspci -knn: 00:03.0 Communication controller [0780]: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31/P35/P31 Express MEI Controller [8086:29c4] (rev 02) lspci -knn: 00:19.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Intel Corporation 82566DC-2 Gigabit Network Connection [8086:294c] (rev 02) lspci -knn: Kernel driver in use: e1000e lspci -knn: Kernel modules: e1000e lspci -knn: 00:1a.0 USB Controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #4 [8086:2937] (rev 02) lspci -knn: Kernel driver in use: uhci_hcd lspci -knn: Kernel modules: uhci-hcd lspci -knn: 00:1a.1 USB Controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #5 [8086:2938] (rev 02) lspci -knn: Kernel driver in use: uhci_hcd lspci -knn: Kernel modules: uhci-hcd lspci -knn: 00:1a.2 USB Controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #6 [8086:2939] (rev 02) lspci -knn: Kernel driver in use: uhci_hcd lspci -knn: Kernel modules: uhci-hcd lspci -knn: 00:1a.7 USB Controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #2 [8086:293c] (rev 02) lspci -knn: Kernel driver in use: ehci_hcd lspci -knn: Kernel modules: ehci-hcd lspci -knn: 00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller [8086:293e] (rev 02) lspci -knn: 00:1c.0 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) PCI Express Port 1 [8086:2940] (rev 02) lspci -knn: Kernel driver in use: pcieport-driver lspci -knn: 00:1c.1 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) PCI Express Port 2 [8086:2942] (rev 02) lspci -knn: Kernel driver in use: pcieport-driver lspci -knn: 00:1c.2 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) PCI Express Port 3 [8086:2944] (rev 02) lspci -knn: Kernel driver in use: pcieport-driver lspci -knn: 00:1c.3 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) PCI Express Port 4 [8086:2946] (rev 02) lspci -knn: Kernel driver in use: pcieport-driver lspci -knn: 00:1c.4 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) PCI Express Port 5 [8086:2948] (rev 02) lspci -knn: Kernel driver in use: pcieport-driver lspci -knn: 00:1d.0 USB Controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #1 [8086:2934] (rev 02) lspci -knn: Kernel driver in use: uhci_hcd lspci -knn: Kernel modules: uhci-hcd lspci -knn: 00:1d.1 USB Controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #2 [8086:2935] (rev 02) lspci -knn: Kernel driver in use: uhci_hcd lspci -knn: Kernel modules: uhci-hcd lspci -knn: 00:1d.2 USB Controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #3 [8086:2936] (rev 02) lspci -knn: Kernel driver in use: uhci_hcd lspci -knn: Kernel modules: uhci-hcd lspci -knn: 00:1d.7 USB Controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #1 [8086:293a] (rev 02) lspci -knn: Kernel driver in use: ehci_hcd lspci -knn: Kernel modules: ehci-hcd lspci -knn: 00:1e.0 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge [8086:244e] (rev 92) lspci -knn: 00:1f.0 ISA bridge [0601]: Intel Corporation 82801IH (ICH9DH) LPC Interface Controller [8086:2912] (rev 02) lspci -knn: 00:1f.2 SATA controller [0106]: Intel Corporation 82801IR/IO/IH (ICH9R/DO/DH) 6 port SATA AHCI Controller [8086:2922] (rev 02) lspci -knn: Kernel driver in use: ahci lspci -knn: Kernel modules: ahci lspci -knn: 00:1f.3 SMBus [0c05]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) SMBus Controller [8086:2930] (rev 02) lspci -knn: 02:00.0 IDE interface [0101]: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88SE6101 single-port PATA133 interface [11ab:6101] (rev b2) lspci -knn: Kernel driver in use: pata_marvell lspci -knn: Kernel modules: pata_marvell lspci -knn: 06:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. - Subject: Closing old installation report #500636
- From: Christian Perrier <bubulle@debian.org>
- Date: Wed, 08 Sep 2010 21:18:34 +0000
- Message-id: <E1OtS2M-0002lj-Dg@ravel.debian.org>
We are closing this installation report for one of the following reasons: - it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian Installer. - indications in the installation report give the feeling that the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to D-I, which we can't easily identify. - indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component - it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-) - it has no information we consider useful The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet. In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be still present, please reiterate your installation test with a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this. You'll find daily builds at http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to install "squeeze" when prompted. If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent against installation-reports. Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian, past and present.
