Comments/Problems:

Burnt my first .ISO on an elder computer with 10xspeed. Boot and installer worked fine until installer tried to find files on the CD (think it was after setting the locales). Message was "Kann Dateien nicht von CD laden" or something like that. Had to abort the whole thing by pressing the POWEROFF-button.
Burnt another CD with 16xspeed. Then it worked.

I'm really glad you improved the installer so much - last time I installed Debian (Sarge) I tried to <ESCAPE> back to correct things - instead it continued as if I had pressed <ENTER>. This time I had selected eth0 which is Firewire and doesnt work (why? dont know, dont care, dont need it at the moment) so I was glad that jumping back worked to select eth1.

Clock/timezone didn't ask me for anything - used the correct zone Europe/Berlin.

Little puzzling item: on first start the update manager wanted to update two kernel modules (dont remember which ones). When executing upload they were of course up-to-date only a boot-config had to be adjusted which was done automatically on next reboot.

I installed Etch because it seemed too complicated for me to upgrade from Sarge and there was nothing really important on my laptop - I hadnt updated for a long time and didnt use it very much because of all these missing things going on my nerves. I like Linux (out of conviction) but I hate tinkering the system instead of using it.

Now with Etch everything seems to work!!::
* X recognized my chipset without asking (no complications, no more vesa) happy 1280x1024 screen!
* USB hotplugs (dont have to mount/unmount it manually as root)
* Touchpad ok (tap & move - scrolling doesnt, but I dont mind. Under Sarge I tried Kernel 2.6 which hotplugged USB but confused the mouse completely) * sound works (under Sarge I finally managed ALSA to play digital sound - could turn it ON or OFF but nothing in between) * power management? Battery status report looks ok. Swap to sleep /SetPowerSave doesnt work - on install uswsusp nagged about a missing Swap partition and I continued with 'YES, continue without' - will tinker a little bit with the configuration.
* Bluetooth is present (dont need that yet so didnt test if it works)
* Booting is twice as fast as before

Thanx very much for Etch!
Mechthild

We are closing this installation report for one of the following
reasons:
- it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian
  Installer.
- indications in the installation report give the feeling that
the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to
D-I, which we can't easily identify.
- indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been
fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component
- it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-)
- it has no information we consider useful

The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool
of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet.

In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be
still present, please reiterate your installation test with
a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this.

You'll find daily builds at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose
the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to
install "squeeze" when prompted.

If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent
against installation-reports.

Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian,
past and present.
