Package: installation-reports

Boot method: CD
Image version: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/etch_di_rc1/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso
Date: 2006-11-26

Machine: Desktop PC
Processor: Intel Pentium II
Memory: 256 Mb
Partitions: <df -Tl will do; the raw partition table is preferred>

Output of lspci -nn and lspci -vnn:
(lspci not installed - net install failed - see below)

Base System Installation Checklist:
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Initial boot: [O]
Detect network card: [O?]
Configure network: [E]
Detect CD: [O]
Load installer modules: [O]
Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [O]
Install base system: [O]
Clock/timezone setup: [O]
User/password setup: [O]
Install tasks: [O]
Install boot loader: [O]
Overall install: [E]

Comments/Problems:

The installer fails to connect to the network regardless of DHCP or
manual configuration. First sign during installation is when it tries
to DHCP to configure the network and can't. Kernel messages (dmesg)
say the card is found, it loads the 3c59x module and overall looks
good but the NIC is unresponsive when actually accessed.

NIC is 3Com 3c900B. This seems to be an issue with kernels 2.6.12 and
later configuring this card on this machine as earlier kernels work
just fine whether as an installer, complete installed debian, knoppix
etc. Went into the archives and tried etch-beta2 and etch-beta3. The
normal install fails the same way. Using "install24", ie kernel 2.4,
works beautifully. This option not available in etch-rc1.

I imagine it's the same origin as bug #381507:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/2006/08/msg00112.html

We are closing this installation report for one of the following
reasons:
- it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian
  Installer.
- indications in the installation report give the feeling that
the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to
D-I, which we can't easily identify.
- indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been
fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component
- it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-)
- it has no information we consider useful

The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool
of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet.

In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be
still present, please reiterate your installation test with
a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this.

You'll find daily builds at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose
the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to
install "squeeze" when prompted.

If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent
against installation-reports.

Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian,
past and present.
