Comments/Problems:

Okay, so I decided to try a current etch installer.

I have some remarks and a possible bug (although I seem to have circumvented
it by installing some software, I'm not sure).

(BTW, the last two points are most important)

- I was surprised to see crypto support in the partitioning phase. First I
thought Debian now supports encrypted partitions for the system in the
installer (encrypt partitions except /boot), but obviously I was wrong.
 :-/
That would be a wishlist item for me, though.

- The installer finds two network interfaces, eth0 and eth1. eth1 is the
real one, I haven't looked at eth0 yet, so I'm not sure what that is. I
can't remember that any installer (Debian sarge, Fedora, Ubuntu, whatever)
showed me two interfaces in the past. Gobolinux's LiveCD does show two
 interfaces, IIRC.

- Software selection: I suppose there's an "expert" boot switch or something
like that that allows me to actually select software on a
per-software-level, not just "Desktop" or something like that. I really
think you should at least ask the user whether he wants to select
software. Few users will never use apt or aptitude. Why not let them do
 that at install time?

- Please take a look at Ubuntu's installer, I like the way they deduce the
correct keymap by asking the user stuff like "is there a e´ key without
 the need to press Shift?".

- You install a bittorrent tracker by default? That's a joke, right?

- I'd like to be able to choose to install KDE and enable it as a default
session. Okay, this is more or less another variation of "please let the
 user select software".

- Recent distributions (Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian...) all seem to not get my
screen setup right. I have a not-too-new Radeon and a Samsung SyncMaster
 950p plus. That's a 19" screen. I definitely do not want a resolution of
 2048x1536@60Hz, thank you very much.

- After installation (and a subsequent reboot) I didn't have a network
connection. eth1 didn't have an IP, probably there was no dhcp request.

I can't reproduce it now. I guess that aptitude update, aptitude upgrade
and quite a lot of newly installed packages made that problem vanish.

Yes, this report should have come before all that additional software...

Package: libdevmapper1.02-udeb
Status: install ok installed
Priority: optional
Section: debian-installer
Installed-Size: 52
Maintainer: Debian LVM Team <pkg-lvm-maintainers@lists.alioth.debian.org>

.
The Linux Kernel Device Mapper is the LVM (Linux Logical Volume Management)
Team's implementation of a minimalistic kernel-space driver that handles
volume management, while keeping knowledge of the underlying device layout
in user-space. This makes it useful for not only LVM, but EVMS, software
raid, and other drivers that create "virtual" block devices.

Package: libparted1.7-udeb
Status: install ok installed
Priority: extra
Section: debian-installer
Installed-Size: 328
Maintainer: Parted Maintainer Team <parted-maintainers@lists.alioth.debian.org>
Version: 1.7.1-2.1
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.6-6), libuuid1-udeb
Provides: libparted1.7-1
Description: The GNU Parted disk partitioning shared library
GNU Parted is a program that allows you to create, destroy,
resize, move and copy hard disk partitions. This is useful
for creating space for new operating systems, reorganising
disk usage, and copying data to new hard disks. This package
contains the Parted binary and manual page.
.
This package contains libparted, the required shared library
used by Parted. This is a cut-down package with no normal
documentation intended to be used in debian-installer.
.
Parted currently supports DOS, Mac, Sun, BSD, GPT, MIPS and
PC98 disklabels/partition tables, as well as a 'loop' (raw
disk) type which allows use on RAID/LVM. Filesystems which
are currently fully supported are ext2, ext3, fat (FAT16
and FAT32), ReiserFS (with libreiserfs) and linux-swap.
Parted can also detect and remove HFS (Mac OS), JFS, NTFS,
UFS (Sun and HP), XFS and ASFS/AFFS/APFS (Amiga) filesystems,
but cannot create, resize or check these filesystems yet.
.
Note that ReiserFS support is only enabled if you install
the libreiserfs0.3-0 package. Since libreiserfs0.3-0 has been
removed from sarge, ReiserFS support is not compiled in the
default package.
.
The nature of this software means that any bugs could cause
massive data loss. While there are no known bugs at the moment,
they could exist, so please back up all important files before
running it, and do so at your own risk.

Description: configures encrypted block devices
Since kernel 2.6.4, encrypted filesystem support is provided by the device
mapper target dm-crypt. This utility provides a command-line interface for
configuring this facility. It has integrated support for LUKS.
.
cryptsetup is backwards compatible with the on-disk format of cryptoloop,
but also supports more secure formats. This package also includes support
for automatically configuring encrypted devices at boot time via the config
file /etc/crypttab. When combined with newer versions of the debian
initrd-tools and standard debian kernels, cryptoroot is also supported.

Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.6-6), libdevmapper1.02-udeb (>= 2:1.02.02-2)
Description: The Linux Kernel Device Mapper userspace library
The Linux Kernel Device Mapper is the LVM (Linux Logical Volume Management)
Team's implementation of a minimalistic kernel-space driver that handles
volume management, while keeping knowledge of the underlying device layout
in user-space. This makes it useful for not only LVM, but EVMS, software
raid, and other drivers that create "virtual" block devices.
.
This package contains a utility for modifying device mappings.

Package: libpopt0-udeb

Description: lib for parsing cmdline parameters
Popt was heavily influenced by the getopt() and getopt_long() functions,
but it allows more powerful argument expansion. It can parse arbitrary
argv[] style arrays and automatically set variables based on command
line arguments. It also allows command line arguments to be aliased via
configuration files and includes utility functions for parsing arbitrary
strings into argv[] arrays using shell-like rules.
.
This package contains the runtime library and locale data.

Version: 3.1d+3+5
Depends: kernel-image-2.6.17-2-486-di, mount-aes-udeb (>= 2.12p-1)
Provides: loop-aes-modules
Description: loop-AES encryption modules for kernel 2.6.17-2-486-di
This package contains the loop-AES loadable Linux kernel modules
compiled for kernel 2.6.17-2-486-di
.
loop-AES can be used to encrypt disk partitions, removable media,
swap space and other devices. It provides measures to strengthen
the encryption: Passphrase seeds, multiple hash iterations, MD5 IV
and use of alternating encryption keys.
.
Encryption keys can be stored in a GnuPG-encrypted keyfile, which
allows the passphrase to be changed without re-encryption. Keyfiles
can also be encrypted asymmetrically for multi-user access.
.
This package includes the cipher modules blowfish, twofish and
serpent in addition to the default cipher (AES).
.
If you compiled a custom kernel, you will most likely need to
compile a custom version of these modules as well. The package
loop-aes-source has been provided for this purpose.

We are closing this installation report for one of the following
reasons:
- it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian
 Installer.
- indications in the installation report give the feeling that
the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to
D-I, which we can't easily identify.
- indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been
fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component
- it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-)
- it has no information we consider useful

The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool
of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet.

In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be
still present, please reiterate your installation test with
a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this.

You'll find daily builds at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose
the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to
install "squeeze" when prompted.

If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent
against installation-reports.

Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian,
past and present.
