Comments/Problems:

<Description of the install, in prose, and any thoughts, comments
and ideas you had during the initial install.>

I recently installed Debian on two machines, especially using the software RAID
capabilities. I would like to mention that the capabilities of
the installer in configuring RAIDs, LVMs and encrypted partitions
are really well-elaborated.

Altough I noticed some (minor) problems, which I would describe
below:

1. Installer let's you create RAID 5 on /
-----------------------------------------
The first machine I installed has 8 IDE 250GB Disk. I tried to
build the following partition:
- First GB of every disk builds RAID 5 mounted on /
- The remaining space on the disks builds a data volume using RAID 5
- no /boot partition

The installer let me apply this setup. But GRUB failed to install
because of the RAID 5 on / (w/o really meaningfull error message).
Lilo failed too, but pointet me to the reason of the problem.
After creating / on a RAID 1, everything worked sound.

2. Really long wait time after creating Software RAID
------------------------------------------------------
The second machine only had two SATA disks (250GB). I used the
following setup
- First 10GBs of each disk builds RAID 1 mounted on /
- Next 1GB of each disk is swap
- Remaining space is used as RAID 1 mounted on /var

After writing the partitions and formatting the disks, the
screen remains empty for a long time. Switching to the console
and watching cat /proc/mdstat showed me, that the RAID rebuild
is in progress and will take about 1 hour. My assumption was,
that the installer waits on that rebuild to proceed. But this
is only an assumption. Anyway, after ca. 5 minutes I returned
on the empty installer screen and pressed CTRL-C. The partition
manager started again. I selected "do not use" for the big
raid partition and everything worked find.

After the installation, I could manually format the big
RAID disk and mount it via fstab w/o problems. My experience
is, that the installation process is really slowed down
when using software RAIDs. The technical reasons for that
are somewhat clear, but maybe it would be possible to
schedule the RAID rebuild after the interactive part
of the installation process? Just an idea, don't know if
raid tools allow such a behaviour...

Version: 1.7.1-2.1
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.6-6), libuuid1-udeb
Provides: libparted1.7-1
Description: The GNU Parted disk partitioning shared library
GNU Parted is a program that allows you to create, destroy,
resize, move and copy hard disk partitions. This is useful
for creating space for new operating systems, reorganising
disk usage, and copying data to new hard disks. This package
contains the Parted binary and manual page.
 .
This package contains libparted, the required shared library
used by Parted. This is a cut-down package with no normal
documentation intended to be used in debian-installer.
 .
Parted currently supports DOS, Mac, Sun, BSD, GPT, MIPS and
PC98 disklabels/partition tables, as well as a 'loop' (raw
disk) type which allows use on RAID/LVM. Filesystems which
are currently fully supported are ext2, ext3, fat (FAT16
and FAT32), ReiserFS (with libreiserfs) and linux-swap.
Parted can also detect and remove HFS (Mac OS), JFS, NTFS,
UFS (Sun and HP), XFS and ASFS/AFFS/APFS (Amiga) filesystems,
but cannot create, resize or check these filesystems yet.
 .
Note that ReiserFS support is only enabled if you install
the libreiserfs0.3-0 package. Since libreiserfs0.3-0 has been
removed from sarge, ReiserFS support is not compiled in the
 default package.
 .
The nature of this software means that any bugs could cause
massive data loss. While there are no known bugs at the moment,
they could exist, so please back up all important files before
running it, and do so at your own risk.

Description: loop-AES encryption modules for kernel 2.6.16-2-486-di
This package contains the loop-AES loadable Linux kernel modules
 compiled for kernel 2.6.16-2-486-di
 .
loop-AES can be used to encrypt disk partitions, removable media,
swap space and other devices. It provides measures to strengthen
the encryption: Passphrase seeds, multiple hash iterations, MD5 IV
and use of alternating encryption keys.
 .
Encryption keys can be stored in a GnuPG-encrypted keyfile, which
allows the passphrase to be changed without re-encryption. Keyfiles
can also be encrypted asymmetrically for multi-user access.
 .
This package includes the cipher modules blowfish, twofish and
serpent in addition to the default cipher (AES).
 .
If you compiled a custom kernel, you will most likely need to
compile a custom version of these modules as well. The package
loop-aes-source has been provided for this purpose.

We are closing this installation report for one of the following
reasons:
- it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian
  Installer.
- indications in the installation report give the feeling that
the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to
D-I, which we can't easily identify.
- indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been
fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component
- it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-)
- it has no information we consider useful

The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool
of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet.

In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be
still present, please reiterate your installation test with
a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this.

You'll find daily builds at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose
the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to
install "squeeze" when prompted.

If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent
against installation-reports.

Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian,
past and present.
