Comments/Problems:

Trying to install Debian on my 'Home Theatre PC' with Intel D915POM motherboard,
the kernel immediately hung after booting the CD. All kernels (also 2.4, also several versions of d-i b2) gave this problem.
I could only boot the kernel with boot parameters 'pci=off acpi=off' (other common acpi parameters did not work) -- however then USB was not working, and this motherboard does not have any ps/2 keyboard connector! So I could not continue installation that way either.

The kernel panic-ed at pci_pcibios_init(). (I can send you the exact address, register values, etc... which I have to read & key in manually after the kernel hangs... if it helps.)

After trying several things, I finally succeeded in compiling my own kernel which would boot AND recognise my USB keyboard AND recognise my ATA disk (as /dev/sda).
I don't exactly know what the difference between the d-i kernel and my one is, that makes it not panic; I don't have the .config from the d-i kernel. I can send you my .config if you want. My first guess is it's enabling 'PCI express' in the kernel that does it - but it's an uneducated guess.

(... so I replaced the kernel on the d-i ISO image (I could not figure out another way of booting the kernel & starting the installer), which would then boot, give me an error "this is not a proper d-i CD", after which I could install the stock d-i b3 CD again and continue.
I'm typing this installation report on my just-installed debian system with my own kernel with all functionality compiled in (and mismatching modules.dep & modules, but the system boots OK.))

 .
This package contains libparted, the required shared library
used by Parted. This is a cut-down package with no normal

 .
Parted currently supports DOS, Mac, Sun, BSD, GPT, MIPS and
PC98 disklabels/partition tables, as well as a 'loop' (raw
disk) type which allows use on RAID/LVM. Filesystems which
are currently fully supported are ext2, ext3, fat (FAT16
and FAT32), ReiserFS (with libreiserfs) and linux-swap.
Parted can also detect and remove HFS (Mac OS), JFS, NTFS,
UFS (Sun and HP), XFS and ASFS/AFFS/APFS (Amiga) filesystems,
but cannot create, resize or check these filesystems yet.
 .
Note that ReiserFS support is only enabled if you install
the libreiserfs0.3-0 package. Since libreiserfs0.3-0 has been
removed from sarge, ReiserFS support is not compiled in the
 default package.
 .
The nature of this software means that any bugs could cause
massive data loss. While there are no known bugs at the moment,
they could exist, so please back up all important files before
running it, and do so at your own risk.

This package contains the loop-AES loadable Linux kernel modules
 compiled for kernel 2.6.16-2-486-di
 .
loop-AES can be used to encrypt disk partitions, removable media,
swap space and other devices. It provides measures to strengthen
the encryption: Passphrase seeds, multiple hash iterations, MD5 IV
and use of alternating encryption keys.
 .
Encryption keys can be stored in a GnuPG-encrypted keyfile, which
allows the passphrase to be changed without re-encryption. Keyfiles
can also be encrypted asymmetrically for multi-user access.
 .
This package includes the cipher modules blowfish, twofish and
serpent in addition to the default cipher (AES).
 .
If you compiled a custom kernel, you will most likely need to
compile a custom version of these modules as well. The package
loop-aes-source has been provided for this purpose.

We are closing this installation report for one of the following
reasons:
- it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian
  Installer.
- indications in the installation report give the feeling that
the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to
D-I, which we can't easily identify.
- indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been
fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component
- it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-)
- it has no information we consider useful

The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool
of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet.

In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be
still present, please reiterate your installation test with
a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this.

You'll find daily builds at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose
the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to
install "squeeze" when prompted.

If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent
against installation-reports.

Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian,
past and present.
