Comments/Problems:

I said somewhat succesful installation in the subject, because
I actually tried installing using the netinst image of 17 may first;
where I did partitioning and fs creation (manually; more on that later).
It did not work because of what is reported in #366177 (but not
correctly diagnosed): tar is missing and the base system cannot be
installed. I tried other netinst images but they had the same problem.
When I downloaded the tar .deb from the installer shell using wget,
put it in /target/var/cache/apt/archives and updated the debootstrap
script to forcibly add tar to $required, it still would not work because
debootstrap said it could not find tar (I assume it wants to copy or
download it and does not use a previously downloaded version).

At that point, I tried the business card image but that gave me an error
earlier on, at network configuration (manually, told on the boot line
not to use DHCP). The 4th console said something about a "symbol
getnameinfo" "version GLIBC_2.2.5 not defined" in netcfg.
The weekly build of the full iso had the same problem.

Then I gave up and tried sarge, which as I actually already knew was too
old - the network card was not detected, nor the 3ware raid controller -
after which I used the beta2 netinst image, which at last worked flawlessly.

About partitioning: I wanted to add "-d su=64k,sw=3" to mkfs.xfs to get
stripe-aligned data chunks, but there's no way that I can see to add
such options. So I partitioned and then from the shell ran mkfs.xfs
manually afterwards; it'd be nice if there were some way to add mkfs
options though.

There's one more oddity, which is the "Incorrect metadata area header
checksum" message lvdisplay/vgdisplay/pvdisplay are giving. Anyone know
what that could be?

are currently fully supported are ext2, ext3, fat (FAT16
and FAT32), ReiserFS (with libreiserfs) and linux-swap.
Parted can also detect and remove HFS (Mac OS), JFS, NTFS,
UFS (Sun and HP), XFS and ASFS/AFFS/APFS (Amiga) filesystems,
but cannot create, resize or check these filesystems yet.
 .
Note that ReiserFS support is only enabled if you install
the libreiserfs0.3-0 package. Since libreiserfs0.3-0 has been
removed from sarge, ReiserFS support is not compiled in the

We are closing this installation report for one of the following
reasons:
- it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian
  Installer.
- indications in the installation report give the feeling that
the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to
D-I, which we can't easily identify.
- indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been
fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component
- it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-)
- it has no information we consider useful

The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool
of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet.

In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be
still present, please reiterate your installation test with
a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this.

You'll find daily builds at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose
the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to
install "squeeze" when prompted.

If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent
against installation-reports.

Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian,
past and present.
