Driver should be sk98lin, but it did not work; the one included in the kernel is outdated and does not recognize my card. So the installer could not use the network; and the resulting base system had a broken driver too. I had to switch to another distro (SUSE 10.0), download some packages + the manufacturer driver, copy them from another partition, recompile it and finally had net. The file /etc/X11/xorg.conf automatically configured by dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg was broken; the image freezes in a few seconds. Graphics card is ATI Radeon Xpress 200, with 64 MB of shared memory. Driver selected automatically is "ati"; with "radeon" it still fails. <Description of the install, in prose, and any thoughts, comments and ideas you had during the initial install.> For some reason grub was not installed; anyway I did not feel like writing a new menu.lst, so I used SUSE for that. Installation of the new sk98lin driver was very hard; had to download packages for linux-sources, linux-kernel-headers, gcc, cpp, binutils, libc-dev... a real pain in the ass. Inclusion in new kernels of a new version of the driver is really necessary. I've never had debian correctly configure xfree86config or xorg.conf, but it would be nice to see it for once. I don't need 3d acceleration, but just the basics; my monitor is a Proview 17" TFT, and my card an onboard ATI. Quite usual hardware, I think. -- Please make sure that the hardware-summary log file, and any other installation logs that you think would be useful are attached to this report. - From: Christian Perrier <bubulle@debian.org>
- Date: Wed, 08 Sep 2010 03:58:08 +0000
- Message-id: <E1OtBnU-0004z1-0e@ravel.debian.org>
We are closing this installation report for one of the following reasons: - it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian Installer. - indications in the installation report give the feeling that the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to D-I, which we can't easily identify. - indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component - it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-) - it has no information we consider useful The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet. In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be still present, please reiterate your installation test with a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this. You'll find daily builds at http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to install "squeeze" when prompted. If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent against installation-reports. Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian, past and present.
