Base System Installation Checklist:
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Initial boot worked: [O]
Configure network HW: [O]
Config network: [O]
Detect CD: [O]
Load installer modules: [O]
Detect hard drives: [E]
Partition hard drives: [O]
Create file systems: [O]
Mount partitions: [O]
Install base system: [E]
Install boot loader: [E]
Reboot: [O]

Comments/Problems:

Detect hard drives: modules "libata" and "sata_uli" were not
automatically loaded so the hard disk would not be recognized. Solved by
manually loading them from a console before the "detect hard drives"
phase.

Install base system: I wanted to install a "sarge" installation from
DVD, but the sarge installer kernel does not include the sata_uli driver
for my hard disk. The etch installer does. It was not clear how to do
this mixed installation. It worked when I:
- booted with the etch installer
- kept the etch installer in the CD drive for the "load installer
modules" phase
- manually changed the CD and put the first sarge DVD in the CD drive
before the "install base system" phase.
That this was difficult to do is not really your fault. I'm just telling
you in case other people ask and you want to put a short note in a FAQ.

Install boot loader: (with GRUB) it didn't realize that I had MS-Windows
installed in sda1, and so no option for booting it was included in the
automatically generated GRUB menu.lst. An additional problem is that I
didn't seem to find any editor with which I could manually modify the
GRUB menu file --so I had to "edit" it with "echo ... >> menu.lst". I
suggest adding a tiny editor, or if there is indeed an editor other than
"vi" or "emacs", I suggest adding a symlink from "editor".

Anyway, I hadn't done a Debian installation from scratch since at least
2.0, and man, what an improvement! Good job.

We are closing this installation report for one of the following
reasons:
- it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian
  Installer.
- indications in the installation report give the feeling that
the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to
D-I, which we can't easily identify.
- indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been
fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component
- it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-)
- it has no information we consider useful

The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool
of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet.

In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be
still present, please reiterate your installation test with
a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this.

You'll find daily builds at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose
the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to
install "squeeze" when prompted.

If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent
against installation-reports.

Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian,
past and present.
